Silky Terrier - Hudson - Small - Adult - Male - Dog
Hudson is a very sweet, lovable male silkie terrier. He is about 3-4 years old, neutered, and current on all shots. He is potty trained & will let you know when he needs to go. Does well on a leash. Hudson was brought to our attention because he has a bite history. When he feels threatens, he feels the need to defend himself whether provoked or not.
Hudson really wants to please his owner & listens really well. Hudson needs an owner who can be assertive with him when he reacts these ways so he can learn that he doesn't have to feel threatened.
Hudson loves to play but also loves to take a nap right next to you. He is getting used to being crate trained, though he is not destructive at all and would do just fine never being crated. He sleeps at the foot of my bed at night or right next to me. He is so quiet I forget he's there. Fostering Hudson is an absolute joy. He will fit best in a family without children. Great companion! I love this little guy & know you will too. He is our mystery dog. Hudson came to us because of behavior problems (biting). He was found running loose outside Kansas City and taken to a shelter nearby. Nobody claimed him so he was offered for adoption. While he was at the shelter he began acting distrustful of people and it was assumed he was stressed in that environment. However, when he was adopted he did not react well to children and was returned for biting. A second placement was tried and again, he did not do well, bit someone who was a stranger to him and was returned. At that point, the shelter asked for help from a rescue who might be able to work with him determine why he was biting and correct the behavior. Their only option was putting him to sleep. We offered to take him, put him in a foster situation and see what we could do. After working with Hudson we believe that he has "little dog syndrome" and is what is called a "fear biter". Little dogs often do not understand that they are not as big and strong as a mastiff (for example) and tend to be territorial and protective of their person. In Hudson's case this is complicated by his response with fear if he is challenged in any way. If something is different, if he meets people he doesn't know, or somebody he does but does not recognize, he goes into defensive growling and barking. If somebody that he does not trust tries to handle him he can respond by biting. We have found that he is cautious when he meets women but quickly relaxes. However, when he meets men his immediate reaction was to growl and bark. If approached he went into fear aggression behavior and if the person persisted it escalated. In interacting with other dogs, he did not understand pack hierarchy and consistently challenged the alpha female (a pittie girl in this case) and although he has learned to avoid her, he still does not behave the "right" way to be accepted in the group. Despite all of this, he has bonded to his foster mom, will do anything she asks and has not attempted to bite anybody. Any children who come in the area are instructed to ignore him and he seems to ignore them. He accepts his foster dad and now loves to be his lap buddy but it took at least a week before he stopped barking and growling at him every time he came inside. We have been working with Hudson and now he will calm down quickly for his foster mom, takes cues from her on people visiting and has started to become playful and more like a typical silky. Hudson would make an excellent companion for someone with a calm household. He needs structure and routine. He loves to ride, is playful without being hyper, is not a nervous barker and has no bad house habits. He likes toys and will play with other dogs so long as they are not dominant or aggressive. He is intimidated by some dogs and by other large animals (including statues of animals) but is in love with the resident neutered male Dane in his foster home. Because of his history, he needs to be in a home where there are no young children with the understanding that if kids come to visit, he is not subjected to noisy active children (qu
